"Showing Up" — My Journey to Building a Creative Community
Two years ago, as we ushered in the new year of 2023, my partner and I decided to turn our aspirations into reality. We made a resolution that would not only nurture our creative spirits but also help us integrate into a new city. Having recently moved from the vibrant streets of Austin, TX, to the historical aura of Boston, we were determined to find our place in this new setting. Our vision? To create weekly creative clubs—mine aptly named "Sketching & Boba" and his "Writing & Coffee."
The idea was simple yet profound. We craved genuine connections and a platform where our creative passions could flourish alongside like-minded individuals. To bring this vision to life, we took to Meetup and began listing our clubs, committing to show up every Saturday morning at local coffee or boba shops, equipped with our art supplies and writing materials. Our mantra was clear: it didn’t matter if we faced an empty room, braved the biting cold, or navigated difficult parking—we were determined to show up.
Our first meeting was modest, attracting just two participants. It was the humble beginning of a journey we couldn't have fully envisioned at the time. In the following weeks, there were moments when it was just my partner and I, sipping our beverages and channeling creativity in solitude. Yet, persistence bore fruit. By the end of the first month, six consistent attendees became our creative companions. Fast forward two years, those initial six have transformed into pivotal leaders of a now-unified club, ART BLOCK. Today, we boast around 50 regular attendees spread across three diverse areas of the city.
This commitment has been nothing short of life-changing. Building and nurturing this community has filled our lives with joy, purpose, and a deep sense of fulfillment. Reflecting on this journey, my only regret is not taking the leap sooner, as the idea had been brewing in my mind for years.
Of course, the path has not been devoid of challenges. There have been times when I questioned my leadership skills or faced the disappointment of missing a Saturday session due to conflicting commitments. Yet, each hurdle has been a lesson—a stepping stone in my ongoing education on community management, engagement, and the art of forging genuine connections.
What I have come to understand is the profound impact of community building. Whether you decide to start your own group or immerse yourself in someone else's, the experience has the potential to transform your life in ways you can't imagine. The magic lies in showing up—consistently and wholeheartedly.
As I continue on this journey, my passion for community building only grows stronger. I am excited about the future of ART BLOCK and the new friendships and creative endeavors that await. So, if you've ever considered embarking on a similar path, I encourage you to take that step. You might be pleasantly surprised by the vibrant tapestry of connections and growth that unfolds.
In the end, showing up isn't just about physical presence—it's about being present for the experiences, the connections, and the growth that await. Here's to the journey of finding and building creative communities, one Saturday at a time.
